History Of The Formation Of Odisha

  1. Orissa was once a part of the kingdom of Kalinga.
  2. King Ashoka conquered Orissa in 250 BC.
  3. After that, temples were constructed in various parts such as Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar under the dynasties of Hindu.
  4. In the year 1576, coastal Orissa became the part of the Mughal Empire.
  5. Soon after the Carnatic wars, Orissa’s southern coast was amalgamated with the Presidency of Madras by the East India Company.
  6. In the year 1912, Orissa and Bihar were formed.
  7. On 1 April 1936, Odisha was formed.

The new province of Odisha was formed after people’s continued struggle, which finally paid off on April 1, 1936. Sir John Hubbak was the first governor of the state. Notable leaders from that movement are Utkala Gouraba, Madhusudan Das, Utkala Mani, Gopabandhu Das, Fakir Mohan Senapati, Pandita Nilakantha Das, and many others.

To remember the contributions and sacrifices made by the people of Odisha in those days, Utkal divas is celebrated all over the state. Not only in Odisha, but Utkal divas is celebrated in many cities and towns in India and abroad, where people from Odisha reside.

Celebrations:

Purple Day of Epilepsy

Celebrated annually on March 26, Epilepsy Awareness Day, or Purple Day, was created to increase the public’s understanding of this brain disorder and to eliminate the fear and stigma surrounding it.

WHEN IS EPILEPSY AWARENESS / PURPLE DAY 2022?

Epilepsy Day is observed every year on March 26.

HISTORY OF EPILEPSY AWARENESS / PURPLE DAY

Epilepsy DayCassidy Megan from Nova Scotia, Canada, founded Epilepsy Awareness Day with the first event held on March 26, 2008. Motivated by her own diagnosis and struggles of living with epilepsy, she realized the importance of everyone understanding this common neurological disorder. She created an avenue for people to learn, engage, and support the public’s education of epilepsy as well as dispel the myths and fears surrounding it.

Epilepsy is caused by electrical disturbances in the brain resulting in seizures of various types. It can be a scary condition to people who do not understand what is going on, which has led to many unnecessary assumptions and even laws about the disease and the capabilities of those who live with it. It’s the fourth most common neurological disorder after migraines, strokes, and Alzheimer’s.

International Day of the Unborn Child 25 March

The International Day of the Unborn Child is observed every March 25th. As a day, to celebrate the value of human life, dignity, and the developing child yet to be born.

International Day of the Unborn ChildEl Salvador was the first to celebrate such a day in 1993, naming it the “Day of the Right to be Born”.  However, it was in 1999, that the President of Argentina declared March 25th the “Day of the Unborn Child,” instigating the first official celebration of the weakest and most vulnerable human beings.

Saint Pope John Paul II fully supported the initiative and encouraged the spread of the celebration throughout the world.
International Day of the Unborn Child in India

In India, it is estimated that over 15 million abortions take place every year. Out of which, a huge proportion of these abortions are deemed to be medically unsafe. Accounting to be the third largest cause of maternal mortality. This is putting them at risk and endangering the lives of expecting mothers.

The Day of the Unborn Child is a day to remember all children who are hidden in their mother’s wombs, to celebrate their lives, to recommit to protecting them, and to advocate against the violence of abortion.
Abortions around the world

According to WHO, every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million abortions that take place. Which constitutes approximately 125,000 abortions per day. More than half of these pregnancies are unplanned, and the abortions administered are unsafe. Which may result in having a lasting effect on women’s physical and mental health.

World Tuberculosis Day

Each year, we recognize World TB Day on March 24. This annual event commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacillus that causes tuberculosis (TB). World TB Day is a day to educate the public about the impact of TB around the world.

World Tuberculosis Day

The theme of World TB Day 2022 – ‘Invest to End TB. Save Lives.’ –conveys the urgent need to invest resources to ramp up the fight against TB and achieve the commitments to end TB made by global leaders.

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading infectious killers worldwide. Every day, close to 4000 people die from TB and nearly 30 000 people fall ill with this disease.

TB is caused by the bacillus Mycobacteria tuberculosis which is spread when people sick with TB expel bacteria into the air; for example, by coughing. TB typically affects the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body. About a quarter of the world’s population is infected with M. tuberculosis and thus at risk of developing TB disease.

Ending TB requires concerted action by all sectors to provide the right services, support and enabling safe environment in the right place, at the right time. Everyone has a role to play in ending TB – individuals, communities, businesses, governments, societies.

The case for investing to end TB is first and foremost financial. Yet, the investment of hard work, determination, emotion, and energy are as essential as the monetary assets needed to end this preventable and curable disease.

Martyr’s Day or Shaheed Diwas 2022

Shaheedi Diwas

It is observed in India on several dates. 23rd March is remembered as the day when three brave freedom fighters namely Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar were hanged.

Bhagat Singh was just 23 years old when he was hanged but his revolutionary ideas were very broad. Not only his ideas inspire millions of Indian youth, but also his thoughts guide the youth of India even in present times.

Bhagat Singh considered the British Rule in India as immoral, unjustifiable and wicked. He wanted an uncompromising struggle for freedom. But freedom of the country was only the first step to wider freedom for the majority of people-workers and peasants. Their exploitation he wanted to see ended. This was to be his ultimate goal. He wanted a party comprising the discipline, hard working, dedicated and uncompromising young men

This day has a very important significance in the Indian freedom struggle.

On this day, in India, Schools and colleges conducts various activities including poetry, speech or drama to pay tribute as well as to salute the revolutionaries who were not deterred even in the face of death.

They were hanged for the killing of John P Saunders, a British police officer. Although they were killed by the British raj but their ideas, patriotic feeling, and sacrifice cannot be forgotten.

World Water Day

WATER IS LIFE AND CLEAN WATER IS HEALTH SAVE WATER

Theme 2022: Groundwater: Making the invisible visible

World Water Day became a UN observance day in 1993. It seeks to focus attention on the global water crisis. On 22 March every year, people and organizations mark World Water Day by taking action to tackle the water crisis.

Groundwater provides almost half of all drinking water worldwide, about 40% of water for irrigated agriculture and about 1/3 of water supply required for industry. It sustains ecosystems, maintains the baseflow of rivers  and prevents land subsidence and seawater intrusion. Groundwater is an important part of climate change adaptation and is often a solution for people without access to safe water. Despite these impressive figures, groundwater is out of sight and out of mind for most people.

Gajendra Singh Shekhawat

Human activities (including population and urbanisation) and climate variability are mounting pressure on invisible groundwater resources; consequently, pollution and over-extraction problems are regularly reported in many parts of the world. Regardless of their importance and of evident threats – we know very little about the state and current trends of the World’s groundwater resources.

As the world’s largest distributed store of fresh water, groundwater plays a central part in sustaining ecosystems enabling human adaptation to climate variability and change. Aquifers have a buffering capacity and they are naturally more resistant to external impact than surface waters.

Groundwater is a common-pool resource and is often utilized at an individual level regardless of overall impact on the aquifer because neither use nor impacts are necessarily immediately visible. This becomes even more complex when aquifers cross state or national borders (most of large aquifers in the world are trans-boundary). Therefore, aquifers need to be governed through a process of shared responsibility and participation, information availability and transparency, and rule of law. Otherwise, mining and polluting of groundwater will continue.

Various kinds of ecosystems depend on groundwater: aquatic (wetlands, rivers and lakes receiving
groundwater), terrestrial (vegetation, either shallow-rooted in alluvial settings or deep-rooted in arid zones) and even subterranean (in limestone formations with karstic caverns). Accordingly, groundwater is an essential part of any ecosystem-based adaptation measure, green infrastructure or a nature-based solution. Water-related disease remains one of the major health concerns in the world. The improvement of groundwater quality, in conjunction with improvement in sanitation and personal hygiene is the main strategy to reduce water-borne disease. Groundwater can be polluted from agriculture, sanitation, industry and mining, landfills and waste disposals, traffic and transport and also from chemical processes with geological environment. Regular groundwater monitoring, vulnerability assessment, protection from point-source and diffuse pollution, and pollutant removal, are some of necessary actions in preserving and improving groundwater quality and our health.

About two third of all abstracted groundwater is used in agriculture. Global food production is increasingly relying on groundwater but over-abstraction (depletion) of groundwater eventually leads to decline of food production. About 1/4 of the energy used globally is spent on food production and supply, including groundwater pumping. Deep aquifers, as a potential source and a sink for heat, can play much more prominent role in the provision of renewable geothermal energy.

Groundwater is the main source of water supply in many cities around the world and increasingly under a pressure due to continuous urbanisation, climate change and inadequate water management; for example, groundwater depletion and land subsidence are serious problems in many cities. The pumping rates in the megacities need to be reduced and compensated by urban rainwater harvesting, rural-urban water transfers, aquifer recharge with wastewater and similar measures.

The Institution will be observing the World Water Day on 22 March 2022 with the core focus on the theme of Water Day 2022 and to inspire mitigative policies and actions towards achieving the mandate of Sustainable Development Goal 6 which pronounces “water and sanitation for all by 2030”.

International Day of Forests Forest Minister

Why Forest ?

The above question is behind the International Day of Forests. Forests are vital to life on Earth. They purify the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, prevent erosion, and act as an important buffer against climate change. The Forests offer a home to much of the world’s diverse array of plants and animals and provide essential natural resources from timber and food to medicinal plants. Forests also support the lives of local communities and help them to thrive.

Forests Under Threat

The Forests around the world are under threat. Despite the key role forests play in the world’s environmental and economic health, we continue to lose forests. Forests are important. They are a huge component in our battle against CO2 emissions. Forests are also being eliminated at a ridiculously scary rate. Every year, we lose a sizeable amount of forest area globally.

International Forest Day

International Forest Day:

International day observed every year on March 21 since 2012. The day aims to raise awareness regarding the importance of all types of forests.

The day was established in 2012 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The forest day was first established on November 28, 2012 to be celebrated on the 21st of March every year by combining World Forestry Day and Forest Day.

World Forest Day theme 2022:

2022 theme is “Forests and sustainable production and consumption”.

We celebrate Forest Day to raise awareness about the importance of forests in our daily lives. International Forest Day is a tremendous occasion to celebrate the world’s wildlife and humanities’ achievements in preservation of it, to educate the public on forests and ecosystems. But it is also a suitable opportunity and the right time to address global problems.
